A letter from Melly Goodell, MD, Chair, Department of Family Medicine

Welcome to the Department of Family Medicine at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center. I am excited to introduce you to our group of dedicated faculty, staff, and residents, and the many initiatives currently in progress in our department. Step inside Family Medicine at "The Square" and take a look. You'll be amazed at what we are doing!

Family Medicine Residency Program

Our 8/8/8 residency is a recognized leader in our region, and we have repeatedly received the maximum accreditation possible for the high quality of resident education we provide. In addition, our four-year combined family medicine/preventive medicine residency in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, allows graduates to complete a Master of Public Health degree along with completing the board eligibility requirements of both the American Board of Family Medicine and the American College of Preventive Medicine.

Community

We train doctors to build healthier communities. Our department includes a Healthcare for the Homeless clinic, run by our faculty, and through which our residents and students rotate. We have active partnerships with the Baltimore County Public Schools and the Y of Central Maryland, among others. All residents also perform community-based research and health improvement projects throughout their training. We collaborate with various local agencies to identify opportunities to improve the health of our communities and to enhance the training of our residents.

Family Health Center

Our busy clinical center provides care for over 33,000 patient visits per year. Using our EHR and innovative practices, we are beginning our 6th year as a Level III NCQA designation as a patient-centered medical home. We have also partnered with the School of Pharmacy at Notre Dame of Maryland University to bring a pharmacist to our faculty to enhance resident education and provide the highest quality of care to our patients.

Faculty

Our 16 faculty members are the heart of our department, and their varied special skills allow an unusual breadth of training for our residents. Many of our faculty have completed fellowships and have areas of emphasis in healthcare policy, advocacy, sports medicine, maternity care and women's health, procedures, geriatrics, homeless healthcare, behavioral health, pediatrics, and dermatology. In addition, our core faculty is augmented by five pediatricians and a pharmacist who have regular clinical and teaching roles.

Students

Teaching is our passion! We have just begun a longitudinal integrated clerkship with students from Georgetown University School of Medicine. Students spend six months on our campus rotating through family medicine, OB/GYN and PEDS in parallel, longitudinally over the six-month period. We also host students from many area medical schools, including the University of Maryland, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and others. We are also a training site for University of Maryland graduate social work students and Notre Dame of Maryland University pharmacy students, and Towson University community health division studies.

Scholarly activity and research

Our faculty are actively involved in educational, clinical, and community-based research, and regularly present their research and scholarly activities at the state, regional and national level. Our resident research projects have received multiple national awards and have been presented at several national forums, including North American Primary Care Research Group, Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM), Family Medicine Education Consortium (FMEC), and American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) conferences.

Leadership

Leadership development is a priority in our department. Our faculty and residents have leadership positions in Society of Teachers in Family Medicine (STFM), Family Medicine Education Consortium (FMEC), the Maryland Academy of Family Physicians (MAFP), the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM), and MedChi, the medical society of Maryland. Our faculty and residents have also lobbied in Annapolis and Washington, DC, testifying for healthcare reform, primary care, and residency education.
